50 poor women get sewing machines

The Bashundhara Foundation has distributed sewing machines to 50 underprivileged women in Bancharampur, Brahmanbaria, to transform the livelihood of the community.

On behalf of Bashundhara Group, Kaler Kantho Editor-in-Chief Imdadul Haq Milan handed over the sewing machine as the chief guest at the programme on Saturday. Bashundhara Group Advisor Maynal Hossain Chowdhury chaired the session.

The noted litterateur also announced educational stipends from Bashundhara Group for 20 students presence at the programme at Upazila parishad in Bancharampur.

Bancharampur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Abul Mansur, former upazila parishad chairman Dudh Miah, Assistant Commissioner (Land) Nazrul Islam, OC Mohammad Mohiuddin, and Bashundhara Shuvosangho Director Zakaria Zaman were present on the occasion.

Firoza Begum, a beneficiary, thanked Bashundhara Group for providing a sewing machine free of charge after a month’s training.

“In a family without a husband, many of her dreams revolve around sewing machines,” she said.

 Maynal Hossain Chowdhury said Bashundhara Group has supported 98 madrashas in the Bancharampur area, while more than 26,000 people have been given interest-free loans so far.

In his speech, Imdadul Haq Milan said that Bashundhara Group has been committed to the welfare of people over the years.

 “The industrial conglomerate has set a unique example of interest-free lending for the first time in the world,” he said.

Bashundhara Shuvosangho is operating 35 sewing machine centres across the country to enhance skills in underprivileged communities, while children are educated in twenty schools in hard-to-reach areas.
