The Bashundhara Group is driving a quiet revolution in the rural economy by providing interest-free loans to underprivileged women, helping them break free from high-interest lending traps. In the latest initiative, loans worth Tk27.5 lakh were distributed in Homna upazila of Cumilla without interest, service charges or collateral.
Over the past twenty years, nearly 30,000 women entrepreneurs have been brought under this initiative, enabling them to pursue financial independence through accessible credit.
The women of Homna in Cumilla are not merely homemakers; each of them is a determined entrepreneur, on whom the future of their families depends. Despite having aspirations, they were repeatedly held back by a lack of capital. At that crucial moment, the Bashundhara Foundation, run by Bashundhara Group, one of the country’s leading industrial conglomerates, stepped in to support them.
At the 82nd loan distribution ceremony held on Monday (27 April) in Haripur village of the upazila, a total of 152 women received financial assistance. The funds were handed over by Bashundhara Group Adviser Maynal Hossain Chowdhury, Chief Executive Officer of Bashundhara Foundation M Nasimul Haque, and Media Adviser to the Chairman Abdul Bari.
Local beneficiaries expressed satisfaction upon receiving the loans. Rahima Begum, a resident of Haripur village, said she had received the loan for the third time and found it highly beneficial, particularly during the harvest season. She noted that the absence of interest and flexible repayment terms had significantly eased her financial burden.
